- Friday abstinence — flesh meat is forbidden in memory of the Passion.
- Friday fast — a day of lesser fare, highly recommended in the older tradition.
- Ember Friday and Saturday — fast with complete abstinence.
- The Ember Days sanctify the seasons and beg worthy ministers for the Church — a quarterly fast of great antiquity.
- Reckoned by the pre-1955 discipline (Code of 1917, before the reductions).
